Getting Started

This document covers what you need to do to get started with the campus Active Directory service.

1] Read the information under Joining the campus AD document and decide to join as an OU or a Domain
2] Decide if you want to join the test or production forest
3] Proceed based on OU or child Domain (See Below)

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH

Read the information under the Joining the campus AD document and decide to join as an OU or a Domain

Read the information available under the Joining the campus AD ( http://xeda.ucdavis.edu/Win2kAD/joining.html ) section of the web site. This section contains information on what it means to join the campus AD as an OU or as a child domain, and explains what services are available in both cases.

Review the documents keeping in mind what you are looking for with your department. It is recommended that you join the campus AD as an OU, unless it can be demonstrated that an OU does not meet your requirements.

Decide if you want to join the test of production forest

You will need to decide if you are ready to go production, or if you would like to try things out first. If you are thinking of joining as a child domain, we ask that you first join the test forest as an OU to see if it meets your needs.

JOINING AS AN OU

Read/Sign the necessary forest agreement

If you wish to join the production forest, you will need to read, sign, and fax the Campus Production Forest Service Level Agreement (http://xeda.ucdavis.edu/Win2kAD/service.html).

If you wish to join the test forest, you will need to read and understand the Campus Test Forest Service Level Agreement (http://xeda.ucdavis.edu/Win2kAD/service.html).

Fill out the "Request to Join" form

Fill out the request form (http://xeda.ucdavis.edu/Win2kAD/joinform.html). This form will be sent to the Active Directory administrators to process your request. You will hear back within two (2) business days of receiving your request. Please fill out all of the required information. If the form is not complete, you will be asked to fill it out again.

Once the information is received and processed, one of the Active Directory administrators will contact you to schedule an appointment to attach your machine to the Campus Active Directory forest. You will be added to the adusers@ucdavis.edu email list, and given access to the instructional documents.
